Rainer Fetting

Rainer Fetting - Andrea trinkt Wasser

Rainer Fetting was born in Wilhelmshaven in 1949.

After an apprenticeship as a carpenter, Rainer Fetting studied painting with Prof Jaenisch at the Berlin University of the Arts from 1971 to 1978. In 1977, together with H. Middendorf, Salomé and B. Zimmer founded the Galerie am Moritzplatz. This group became known as the "Neue Wilde", "Junge Wilde" or "Moritzboys".1

One year later (1978), Fetting received a DAAD scholarship and moved to New York. There he exhibited at renowned galleries such as Mary Boone and Marlborough and took part in exhibitions at internationally recognised museums such as the Museum of Modern Art (1987) and the Guggenheim (1988).

In Europe he took part in the exhibitions "Heftige Malerei" (Haus am Waldsee, Berlin 1980), "New Spirit in Painting" (Royal Academy of Arts in London, 1981), which was organised by Christos M. Joachimides, and in the "Zeitgeist" exhibition in the Martin-Gropius-Bau in Berlin (1982). Bruno Bischofberger also showed his work at the gallery in Zurich and Anthony d ́Offay in Paris.

After his return to Berlin, Fetting designed sculptures of leading politicians. In 1996 he immortalised Willy Brandt and in 2008 Helmut Schmidt in bronze.

A comprehensive monograph on Rainer Fetting was published by DuMont Verlag to coincide with the book fair in Frankfurt in 2009. One of the authors is the director of "Documenta IX" Jan Hoet. In autumn 2010, Rainer Fetting was the subject of a major exhibition entitled "Manscapes" at the Kunsthalle Tübingen, which was also accompanied by a comprehensive catalogue. In 2011, the Berlinische Galerie, Berlin, showed the solo exhibition "Rainer Fetting, Berlin"

Like Jiří Georg Dokoupil, Rainer Fetting was also honoured in 2015 with special exhibition participations that attracted great international attention:

"The 80s", Städel Museum, Frankfurt am Main, 2015
"Geniale Dilletanten", Haus der Kunst, Munich, 2015
"Aufruhr in Augsburg", Pinakothek der Moderne, Außengalerie Augsburg, 2015/16 "Die Neuen Wilden", Groninger Museum, Netherlands, 2016

Numerous works from various years of his oeuvre are currently being presented at Gottdorf Castle. This Rainer Fetting retrospective will then be shown in Dortmund.

Rainer Fetting lives and works in Berlin, Sylt and New York.
