Description

"Heroes" was written by David Bowie during his time in Berlin (1976 to 1978). The Wall divided Germany, and the song tells the story of a couple kissing at the barricade while border guards are shooting at them. A significant influence on Bowie's groundbreaking work was also an expressionist painting by Otto Müller: the painting “Liebespaar zwischen Gartenmauern” (Lovers between Garden Walls) from 1916. One artwork inspired a song, whose lyric "We Can Be Heroes" in turn provides a frame for this exhibition. In a time when walls are rising again everywhere, and our society is deeply divided, we need heroes now more than ever. This exhibition presents the works of five female artists who, to me, are heroines because they refuse to accept walls in our thinking, want to bring them down, and because they celebrate and explain life in all its fragility, complexity, and beauty. The artists are seismographs for the shifts and tremors in our social fabric – and they are, like David Bowie: pure energy and creativity.
